Sabbath Day (Gen.2: 1 -3 & Ex.20: 8 – 11) by r. a. Saturday, Feb.08, 2020
In Messiah’s name: “Do you see a man/woman wise in his/her own eyes? There is more hope for a fool (unwise, silly person) than for him/her”.(Prov.26: 12) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments:”(Ps.111: 10)
Self-Righteous is defined as believing that one’s ideas/beliefs and behaviour are morally better than those of other people. For example, someone may be a non-smoker and have a feeling of self-righteousness because they don’t smoke, while others do. No offence intended to the non-smokers. 🙂
It is so easy to be self-righteous. It is a human and natural inclination that we all need to overcome. And, it is difficult to detect in ourselves. It takes other people and especially the word of the Creator-God and his son to point it out to us.
Here are 4 ways in which self-righteousness is described/revealed in the bible.
(1) It’s Objectionable To The Creator: 4 “Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them (nations) out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you.” (Deut.9: 4)
(2) Offensive/Insulting To God: “Who (the sinful Israelites) say, ‘Keep to yourself, Do not come near me, For I am holier than you.” (Isa.65: 5)
(3) The self-righteous are Boastful: “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.” (Lk.18: 11 -12)
(4) Reject Creator’s Righteousness: “For they (Israelites) being ignorant of God’s righteousness (his laws), and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.” (Rom.10: 3)
Pride can prevent one from over-coming his/her self-righteousness — we become “unteachable” and unwilling to listen to those who might show us where we are wrong in our understanding/beliefs.
Self-righteousness leads us to believe the lie that we can be good enough in ourselves (without obedience to the Creator) to qualify for salvation – eternal life. I’m reminded of Oprah Winfrey who claimed that there are many ways to God and salvation – it’s a personal matter.
Notice this biblical proverb: “There is a way that seems right to a man/woman, But its end is the way of death.” (Prov.16: 25) There is only one way to the Creator-God and it is HIS WAY – through his son, Messiah (Yahshua/jesus)
The self-righteous person picks parts of the Bible that he/she likes and prides him/herself on keeping those scripts. However he/she condemns as “legalists” those who seek to obey all of God’s word as he and his son commanded.
Finally, If we judge others for the very sins that we commit, we are guilty in God’s court of justice — we become self-righteous hypocrites. As Messiah warned: “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” (Matt 7: 5)
May we all be truly converted, baptized and obey the Creator’s commandments, statutes (Holy Daya) and judgments (meaning the expression and essence of the 10 commandments), some of which are found in Deut.chpts 4, 5, 6, & chpt. 18 verses 9 – 22.
When we do them, we become true followers of the great I AM’s son, Messiah ,Yahshua(jesus). And, we will inherit eternal life and become part of the coming Kingdom (government) of God which Messiah will establish on this earth.(Rev.11: 15)
All glory, praise and honor to the Creator-God, the great I AM, in Messiah’s (Yahshua’s) name.
Peace, blessings and protection to all who seek and love the truth — God’s Word (Jn.17: 17 & 119: 142)
