An investigation into a deadly riot at an Australian detention center has revealed that an Iranian asylum seeker was “brutally beaten” to death by a Salvation Army worker.
Reza Barati, 23, sustained fatal head injuries in February after hundreds of asylum seekers tried to break out of a camp on Manus Island off the Papua New Guinea (PNG) coast.
On Monday, the independent review on behalf of the Australian government quoted an eyewitness as saying that Barati suffered severe brain injury after a brutal beating led by a PNG national worker employed by the Salvation Army.
The review found no particular factor leading to the unrest at the Manus Island camp.
“It is not possible to isolate one factor which, if handled differently, may have resulted in less injuries and damage or to apportion blame for causing the incidents directly to one or more of the parties involved,” it said.
However, the report added that frustration and anxiety about future of the inmates is seen as the most probable reason behind the asylum seekers issue. Nearly 70 people were also injured in the violent crackdown.
In February, Australian newspapers reported that Barati might have been killed by Australian guards who stomped his head as he fell defenseless on the ground.
The reports cited an unnamed Australian guard at the camp accusing a group of other guards of attacking Barati in frenzy.
Australian Border Protection Minister Scott Morrison said Australia would repatriate Barati’s body to Iran at his family’s request after an autopsy is conducted on his body.
Following the incident, Australians held protests in a suburb of Sydney to denounce the killing.
The protesters slammed the government’s immigration policies, calling for the resignation of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
