The Canadian media (like the USA, emphasis mine) is replete with pro-Israel pundits most of whom have voiced criticism towards the United Church of Canada in recent days.
The United Church of Canada recently passed motions which encourage church members to promote a boycott of Israeli products produced in illegal settlements.
While the United Church has received staunch criticism from pro-Israel journalists in Canada, it has received praise from anti-racists and Human Rights advocates throughout the country.
The United Church and its supporters have defended the church’s right to boycott illegal settlements, citing international law and the plight of Christian minorities in the war-torn polity.
Analysts say that while the United Church’s decision to stand in solidarity with the oppressed of Palestine might seem radical in the context of Canada, which has a very pro-Israel government and media establishment, to the rest of the world their motions would appear reasonable and judicious.
Analysts say they hope the support for Palestinian self-determination displayed by the United Church will help force Canada to shift tack and take a more balanced position towards the Israel/Palestine conflict.
